New engine for BMW E39 523i M52
at Schmiedmann Odense
As you know if you read our newsletter last week, we have a lot of exciting engine projects going on at Schmiedmann Odense.
One of them was finalised this week!
A customer's BMW E39 523i with M52 engine received a new, second-hand engine.
The M52 engine is, unfortunately for many, not available from new anymore, so we fitted a used M52 engine.
The customer came to the workshop because the car was losing coolant almost faster than he could replenish it.
It turned out that the head gasket was defective. The engine had simply shot out a piece of the head gasket, leaving a gap between the cylinder head and the engine block.
The BMW E39 is known as a perpetual motion machine, and the owner is very happy with his BMW E39 523i. So happy that he gave it a new, second-hand engine.
The original engine had travelled over 417,000 kilometres!

Upgraded Meyle water pump in reinforced Schmiedmann version
The original BMW water pump on the M52 engines has a weakness:
The paddle wheel
The impeller of the original water pumps on the M52 engines is made of plastic.
The wheel tends to move around when the car is idling, as it should, but when the car accelerates and drives, the paddle wheel is stationary.
The consequence is often overheating of the engine.
Troubleshooting can be problematic for the workshop as the fault only occurs when the car is running, not when it is idling.
At Schmiedmann, we are of course aware of these types of errors and therefore also have the solution.
Together with our long-standing partner, the world-renowned German manufacturer of high-quality spare parts, Meyle, we have developed a water pump for the M52 engine with an aluminium impeller.
The aluminium impeller does not have the same tendency to stop when the engine is accelerating or running.
When you choose a reinforced water pump with an aluminium impeller, you are less likely to overheat your motor.
The engine that we, at Schmiedmann Odense, wrote in a customer's E39 523i was of course fitted with the reinforced version of the water pump.

Marek's BMW E36 is a 328i coupe, painted Montreal blue with white leather upholstery with heated seats.
A range of m3 parts from the same generation, GT rear wing, rear skirt insert and adjustable undercarriage.
It doesn't stop there, the brakes have also been upgraded and taken from a BMW E46 330i.
The tuned engine sends the exhaust gases out through a complete stainless Schmiedmann exhaust system, from the manifold all the way to the tailpipes.
The car is on original BBS RC300 R18.
